The Salvation Army will celebrate National Donut Day in Hawai‘i on June 2 with free Krispy Kreme donuts, thrift store discounts and 7-Eleven store donations.

The charitable organization is recognizing the occasion in commemoration of the 100th anniversary since its female volunteers began serving soldiers on the frontlines of WWI.

“While Donut Day is always fun, it’s particularly special this year because we are commemorating 100 years since The Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies first began serving donuts to soldiers on the front lines of WWI in France in 1917,” said Major John Chamness, divisional leader for The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division.

During the war, Donut Lassies also provided soldiers with writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending and meals, including donuts. Chamness said costumed Donut Lassies will participate in the pastry-laden, day-long celebration at bakery locations statewide.

As part of the commemoration, Salvation Army Thrift stores in Hawai‘i will provide free donuts and coffee from 10 a.m. until noon, while supplies last. Stores will also offer a 25 percent discount to customers throughout the day on all items except furniture. In addition, 7-Eleven Hawai‘i stores will donate proceeds from its Canister Change Program during the month of June to support The Salvation Armyʻs Corps programs throughout the Islands.

The public is encouraged to participate by sharing photos relevant to Donut Day via social media by using the hashtags #NationalDonutDay and #GivingIsSweet.
