KapohoKine Adventures on the Big Island has completed its final count of food donations collected over Memorial Day Weekend during its annual Kamaaina Appreciation Weekend.

The generosity of Hawai‘i island’s kama‘āina has allowed KapohoKine Adventures to donate more than 500 pounds of non-perishable food to The Food Basket, Hawai‘i Island’s Food Bank.

For the 8th year, the employees of KapohoKine Adventures spent Memorial Day Weekend showing its appreciation to locals by giving away more than 250 free zips. What started as an offer of free ziplining with a canned food donation to the first 50 in line each day ended up with KapohoKine Adventures extending the day, taking every single person in line.

This year, the weekend celebration expanded beyond ziplining to include a two-day, free family festival outside of the Grand Naniloa Hilo hotel with free kayak and paddleboard use at Hilo Bay, face painting, henna tattoos, a huge water slide and bouncy house, live music, entertainment, games and food.

“Many of our local families are unable to afford ziplining even at the steepest discount,” said Tony DeLellis, co-owner of KapohoKine Adventures. “We want to give residents a chance to experience what’s in our own backyard, and take pride in the fact that it is our natural surroundings that draw so many visitors to the island.”
