There isn’t a lot of “bustling” that goes on in the tiny town of Honomu, Hawai‘i (pop. 509). I’ll bet the residents don’t care, though, because it looks like this.
I imagine they’d prefer to keep their view and leave the bustle to other Big Island towns.
Honomu is also on the way to Akaka Falls, which is a wonderful walk filled with beautiful flowers, fauna and a very impressive waterfall.

It’s a very quiet, pretty, place. However, there is one spot where things are hoppin’—Mr. Ed’s Bakery.
There really is a “Mr. Ed.” His name is Dean Edmoundson. I’ve included a picture in case you want to say hello. There is also a “Mrs. Ed”—June Edmoundson. They are warm and gracious hosts in the bakery, happy to show you around and point out the stacks of goodies—which are everywhere!
The bakery sort of oozes into two rooms. It could probably ooze into a third because when the tourists arrive, it’s elbow-to-elbow. You’re first met by the pastry case, but don’t spend your whole wad there. There are also dazzling varieties of cookies, from shortbread to chocolate chip and lots in between. I think every flat space in the entire place has a basket of some type of cookie on it.

But wait, there’s more. I almost forgot about the brownies. I had to have one topped with coconut. There were also brownies with macadamia nuts on top. I kept picking things up and carrying them around. My fellow customers looked just like I did— as my husband put it, carried away. Well, yes, I was, but how often do I go to Honomu? I needed to stock up.
Moving into the next room, there is a wall—yes, an entire wall—of jellies and jams. If you get overwhelmed by the choices, it’s okay: Mr. Ed has several open jars in a mini-fridge for tasting. I came away with a dragonfruit-lime that I think will make killer thumbprint cookies. I’m going to add some grated lime peel to the cookie dough.
Hungry? Mr. Ed’s can do lunch. Besides the stack of musubis, you can get an old-timey hamburger, a cheeseburger, sandwiches, chili and hot dogs.

Hot? No worries, Mr. Ed’s also has ice cream.
Mr. Ed’s also carries gifts, postcards and coffee.
Since you’ll burn some calories after walking Akaka Falls, go ahead and stop in to refuel and relax.
