entertainment, drew a fashion-loving crowd who began forming a line at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. By the time the doors opened at 9 a.m., over 100 people were standing in line.
The Hawai‘i lifestyle brand MANAOLA Pop-up Store in the Prince Kuhio Plaza opened a day earlier this year than in years past.
“We wanted to give the people of Hilo one more day,” said owner Manaola Yap. “In previous years, we’ve seen the lines so long and people patiently waiting for their chance to get in. We felt we should give them an extra day. We’ll be here until Saturday, April 22.”

MANAOLA is also hosting Lei Ana O Hilo: A lei contest on Friday, April 21, offering $1,000 for first place, $800 for second place and $500 for first place.

Hawai‘i lifestyle brand MANAOLA will hold a pop-up event in Hilo at Prince Kūhiō Plaza during the 2017 Merrie Monarch Festival, April 18 to 22.

The second annual MANAOLA Merrie Monarch pop-up will provide exclusive access to the label’s new collection.
More than just a shopping experience, the MANAOLA pop-up features a full schedule of special events ranging from live in-store musical performances to artisan flower and lei contests.
Throughout the five-day event, MANAOLA will debut new releases daily, including the label’s kāne, wāhine and keiki apparel; lifestyle accessories; Kaila jute collection; and the Kōlani Couture capsule.
To honor the arts of the designer’s ancestors, the MANAOLA pop-up will illuminate Hawaiian creativity through hula, music and Hawaiian craftsmanship with a myriad of special events.
Shoppers will be treated to live in-store performances by award-winning Hawaiian music artists including Project Kuleana-sponsored musicians.

MANAOLA highlights the whimsical art of hula hair by encouraging guests to slick back their finest bun or hula pouf and style their looks with vibrant flowers like the 10 beautiful soloists taking the stage for the most prestigious solo hula title in the world, the Miss Aloha Hula competition.

Lei Ana ‘O Hilo: Lei Contest Day
As a proud lei making practitioner, Manaola and his ‘ohana welcome guests to participate in this year’s lei making contest to showcase their love for this art form. Accepted styles of foliage lei are Humu Papa, Haku, Wili, Kipu‘u, Hili, Hilo and any style of Kui. The entry fee is $10 per lei (maximum three entries per person, no visible names). The first place winner of the lei contest receives $1,000; second place, $800; and third place, $500.

The exhilarating energy of the group kahiko competition provides an endless source of inspiration for poʻe hula and appreciators alike. To celebrate the spirit of kahiko night we ask guests to wear their favorite lei poʻo in the spirit of the kahiko theme, as it means “to adorn.” Let us adorn ourselves in the beauty of this essential hula tradition as we prepare for an exhilarating evening of hula excellence.

For the final night of hula completion, we acknowledge ‘ike kūpuna with a sentimental theme dedicated to the late auntie Elizabeth Maluihi Lee and other designer’s beloved tūtū Mary Ann Lim. We encourage you to don your own tūtū’s cherished papale or style your own as an homage to the brilliant leaders who have come before us.
