Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) released the following statement regarding reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign, a revelation that contradicts Jeff Sessions’ testimony before the Senate.

“These new reports make it clear: Attorney General Jeff Sessions cannot and should not be the person to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, which now include the attorney general himself. The reports also make clear that this administration struggles with telling the truth. We need an independent prosecutor, and we must empower all relevant committees in the Congress to conduct an exhaustive, bipartisan and transparent investigation.”
