Augustin Resurreccion, 90, of Lānaʻi City, Hawaiʻi, passed away on Jan. 25, 2017, at Lānaʻi Community Hospital. He was born on Aug. 28, 1926, in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.

Visitation will be held from 8 to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary on Lānaʻi; mass will begin at 10 a.m.; burial will follow at Lānaʻi Cemetery.

Augustin was a retired planter for Dole Company. He is survived by his sons, Elbert Resurreccion, Lester (Rena) Resurreccion, Roland (Michelle) Resurreccion; 6 grandchildren; and several loving brothers and sisters on Hawaiʻi Island.

He is survived wife Cynthia; daughters Alliah and Arcy Topenio of Kailua-Kona; mother Zoraida Topenio of Kailua-Kona, HI, brothers Robert (Chikako) Topenio of Honolulu, HI; Renier Joe (Kimberly) Topenio of Philippines; sisters Jenny Topenio of Philippines; and Maria Catherine (June) Caramol of Philippines. Numerous auntys, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mercedes Maria Kojis, 96, of Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi, was born in Tucson, Arizona on Feb. 17, 1920, and passed away on Jan. 19, 2017 in Kohala, Hawaiʻi. Mercedes was a home maker and attended the Jehovah Witness Church.

She is survived by son Richard (Margie) Kojis of Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Edwin Carlos Valenzuela, 61, of Kapaau, Hawaiʻi, was born in Kapaau on July 3, 1955, and passed away at home on Jan. 16, 2017 in Kapaau, Hawaiʻi. Edwin worked as a groundskeeper. Former member of Kohala’s own I’land Boiz.

He is survived by wife Blace; sons Jentzen Valenzuela of Waikoloa; Edwin K. (Kanoe Conte) Valenzuela of Hawi; daughters Kimi (Sione) Vakauta of Kohala; Mei Ling (Paulo Sauta) Valenzuela of Waikoloa; brothers Ernest (Marsha) Valenzuela of Waimea; Lawrence (Fraline) Valenzuela of Hilo; Fredrick (Darnell) Valenzuela of Keaau; Raymond (Dawn) Valenzuela of Kapaau; sister Florence (Camillo) Carlos of Kohala; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing visitation will be held on Friday Feb. 3 2017 at Hilo Ballard Mortuary from 10 a.m. to noon. Lite refreshments will be served. Celebration of Life will be held on Feb. 25 2017 at Kalahikiola Congregation Church in Kohala at 9 a.m. to noon.

Kathleen Louise D’Amico, 64, of Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi, was born in Ft. Meade, Maryland on Aug. 7, 1952, and passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 15, 2017. Kathleen had been teaching in Hawaiʻi for over 40 years.

She is survived by sons Nicholas (Abbie) D’Amico of Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi; Michael (Amanda) D’Amico of Roanoke, Virginia; and mother Edna Logan of Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi.

A celebration of Kathleen’s life will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a short service beginning promptly at 11 a.m. The celebration will take place at Waikoloa Community Church, 68-3625 Paniolo Ave., Waikoloa, HI 96738.

Mona Yoshitaro, 34, of Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi, was born in the Marshall Islands on Sept. 7, 1982, and passed away on Jan. 6, 2017 in Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi. Mona worked in restaurant food service.

She is survived by sons Edward Skilling of Tucson, Arizona; Kevin Skilling of Ocean View, Hawaiʻi; Phillip Skilling of Ocean View, Hawaiʻi; Daven Yoshitaro of Marshall Islands; A. J. Abner of Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi; daughters Marciana Skilling of Mt. Vernon, Oregon; Mimi Skilling of Ocean View, Hawaiʻi; Jerina Skilling of Marshall Islands; brothers Taruo (Roseanne) Albious of Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi; Kestaro (Ralynn) Yoshitaro of Tucson, Arizona; Michael Yoshitaro of Ocean View, Hawaiʻi; sister Carlina (John Robert) Yoshitaro of Mt. Services will be held at the home on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, with burial on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at Naalehu Community Cemetery.

Betty Jane Dickerhoof, 82, of Kīhei, passed away on Jan. 25, 2017 at Hospice Maui Hale in Wailuku. She was born on July 21, 1934 in Ravenna, Ohio.

Betty is survived by her children, Linda Scott, Jane (Joseph) Butcher, Darlene Stone-Flores, Thomas (Cindy) Pettit, and Drenda Ann Wilcox; 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald “Donnie” Dickerhoof, and daughter Susan.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to either Hospice Maui or the American Lung Association.

Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Waiehu Ward, 125 Kamehameha Avenue, Kahului, Hawaii 96732; service will begin at noon; burial will follow, 2 p.m., at Maui Memorial Park Cemetery in Wailuku.

Boy San worked in security at Maui High School. He was also a weight training coach at Baldwin High School. He is survived by his wife, Davelyn Kahealani Hoewa’a; sons, Deven Ihapo Kekai Hoewa’a, Layson Kainoa Hoewa’a, Dayton Kalei Hoewa’a; hanai sons, Rayden Kekona, Chanten James Edlao, Cheynon Kamaka-Edlao; daughters, Lyenne Kawehilani (Vai Tatafu) Hoewaa, Lysha Kapolinahe Hoewaa, hanai daughter Lahela Kekona-Cluney; parents, Arthur “Bunny” & Linda Ann Hoewa’a; sisters, Dawn Nalani Hoewa’a, Liah-Ann (Alia) Hoewa’a-Mahuna; hanai sister, Gail U’ilani Kekona-Cluney; and grandchildren, Skailee Manaois-Hoewa’a, Halen Kilohana Hoewa’a-Loto, Elayna Hokua’onani Loto, Siosiua Keaola’i Tatafu; and “chokest” aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Stephen “Tuffie” C. Medeiros Jr.
June 2, 1952 – January 21, 2017

Stephen “Tuffie” C. Medeiros Jr., of Hāliʻimaile passed away peacefully at Maui Memorial Medical Center with his loving family and friends by his side on Jan. 21, 2017. Stephen was born on June 2, 1952 in Puʻunēnē, Maui to Maybelle (Cooper) and Stephen Medeiros Sr.

On Nov. 18, 1972 he married his love, Stella Vares and together they raised their two daughters. Stephen was an automotive mechanic with Valley Isle Express before moving to the State DOT Highways, where he retired.

Tuffie was known by many as the legend of Mokuia, a place he called his second home. His love for fishing, classic cars, and Elvis was well known.

Stephen will be remembered as a loving, and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 44 years, Stella; daughters Tina (Koa) Martin and Emy-Jo (Kelvin) Ferguson, grandchildren Briana, Jeison, Casey, Emily and Danielle. He is also survived by brothers, Clyde “Pocho” (Cheryl) Medeiros, Mark “Willie” (Karen) Medeiros, and sister Jolene “Dee Dee” (Martin) Cabradilla.

Services over ashes will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 at St. Joseph Church in Makawao. Visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m., eulogy 10:30 a.m., Mass 11 a.m., and burial at 1 p.m. at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery.

Carlos Valentine Molina, Jr., 79, of Makawao, Maui, passed away on Jan. 21, 2017. He was born on June 30, 1937, in Louisiana.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at Norman’s Mortuary; Burial will follow, 1 p.m., at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.

Carlos was a retired Boatswain for the United States Coast Guard. He was predeceased by his wife, Rita Molina. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Molina of California; sister, Janice Hogan of Louisiana; grandchildren, Christopher Thrower (Jennifer Flores) of Maui, Joshua Thrower of Milan, Italy, Cameron Thrower of California; great grandson, Jordan Babcock; nieces, Laura Kersten, Susan Oshiro, Cindy Mayo, Vanessa Hein, Nicole Hein; nephews, Ray Newman, Ralph Hein, Dale Martin, Scott Mayo; grand nieces and nephews, and extended ohana.

Masanori Kaya Sr., 91, of Kula, passed away on Jan. 20, 2017 at Kula Hospital. He was born on Dec. 24, 1925 in Wailuku.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 at Ballard Family Mortuary, service will begin at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Masanori was a retired carpenter.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Amy) Kaya, Gerald Kaya, Ransom (Nani) Kaya, George “Keoki” Kaya, and Masanori (Dana) Kaya Jr.; daughters, Linda Oshiro, and Jenai (Connie) Kaya; 1 brother, 2 sisters; 14 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Masanori was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine Pelekila Smith.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 at Norman’s Mortuary at 6 p.m. and service to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Agripina was a Housekeeper in the hotel industry. She is pre-deceased by her husband Teodoro Cabulisan; survived by her sons Arthur (Jessie), Elmer (Glenda), Alex (Judith); daughters Thelma, Teresita, Clarita (Jovy), and Liza along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Juanita Aluanu Kapu

Juanita Aluanu “Carol” Kapu passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at Islands Hospice surrounded by loved ones.

She was born on July 11, 1933 to Samuel K. Kapu Sr. and Juanita A. Guerrero Kapu in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. A graduate of Kamehameha School, Kapalama class of 1952. She was kumu hula and loved by all who met her. She was “the emblem of true Aloha”. She touched the lives of many people and graced this earth with her beautiful voice and her lovely hula.

She is survived by her “honey”, Roback J. “Boise” Kawaiaea; daughter, Ann Gilbert; sons, Mike (Angel) Gilbert and Kawai’ola (Anna) Wolfgramm; sisters, Nani (Ernie) Chan and Dutchie Saffery (Kim Barclay-Kerr, NZ); brother, Sam “Bubby” Kapu Jr; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebrations of Life will be held in Kahului, Maui at Ballard Family Mortuary on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon with a prayer service at noon. Honolulu arrangements are pending.

James Wesley Boonstra

James Wesley Boonstra, 86, of Lahaina, passed away peacefully on Jan. 15, 2017, surrounded by his loving family and wife.

“Jack” was born on Aug. 27, 1930 in Chicago to a hard-working family, he was the middle of 12 children. Jim married his love, Verna and together they raised an extended family.

Friends of Lahaina Para-Sail, Arabesque, Boonstra Concrete, Old Lahaina House all companies of which Jim was an integral part are invited to a celebration of his life at 1423 Front Street, Lahaina on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. (sunset) for pupu’s and talk story.

Jim is survived by wife, Verna; Daughter Sherry-Ann Barbier; Son, James Kenneth Boonstra; grandchildren, John-James, Tiana, Bryce Barbier & Jayme Boonstra. He is preceded in death by his son in law, James Barbier.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jack’s name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Anthony was a Mechanic/Carpenter and is survived by his brother’s Alfredo Tacla, Dennis Tacla, Damien (Ann Shinyama) Tacla,; sister’s Gloria (Samuel) Sales, Marilyn Tacla, and loved by numerous niece’s and nephew’s.

Daniel Shigeo “Shige” Owan, 77, of Wailuku, Maui, passed away on Jan. 13, 2017, at his home. He was born on Aug. 19, 1939 in Wailuku, Maui.

Shige was a retired Heavy Equipment Mechanic for Wailuku Sugar Company. He is survived by his wife Mary Hyades Ululani Owan; sons, Scott (Cheryl), Angus (Celia), Daniel (Andrea), Dean “Dino” (Laura); daughter, Lisa (BenJohn) Somera; brothers, Ronald Owan, Stanley Owan (Deceased); sisters Misao (Rick) Medina, Florence (Lee) Endress, and Evelyn (Sachi) Stambler; and grandchildren Shanda, Niko, Jave, Kaleo, Faith, Joycelyn, Jason, Precious, Deanah, and “AJ” Angus.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wailuku; service begins at 1 a.m.; burial to follow, 2 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park Cemetery in Wailuku.

Artemio Quinsaat, 87 of Kīhei, passed away on Jan. 12, 2017 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born on June 5, 1929 in Ilocos Sur, Philippines.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at Ballard Family Mortuary, service will begin at 7 p.m. Burial will be held in the Philippines at a later date.

Artemio retired from the Renaissance Hotel now known as the Andaz Wailea Hotel.

He is survived by sons, Dionisio (Loreta) Quinsaat, Henry Quinsaat; daughters, Emilia (Onofre) Corpuz, Nelia (Samuel) Atiburcio; brothers, Asterio, and Victor Quinsaat; sisters, Antonia, and Josephine Quinsaat; 6 grandchildren, Allan Corpuz, Ares Corpuz, Robert Quinsaat, Rodell Quinsaat, Cecille Carino, and Dionisio Quinsaat Jr.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
