More than 700 people came out Saturday, Oct. 15, for the Fourth Annual Liliko‘i Festival at the Maku‘u Farmers Market in Pāhoa.
The festivities included performances, demonstrations, keiki activities, more than 28 vendors, a silent auction and a cooking contest.
Among the cooking contestants was returning prize winner Destiny Ohara of Pāhoa, who entered her Coconut Liliko‘i Pie and her Healthy Make Ahead Breakfast. Ohara wanted to make a dish that was inclusive of all lifestyles, especially vegans.
“I thought I’d give it a try and see what I could come up with,” explained Ohara, adding how vegans are often unrepresented at cooking events.

The Make Ahead Breakfast includes fresh kiwi, starfruit, oats, barley, cashew milk, cane sugar and liliko‘i.
This creative recipe earned Ohara third place in the entrée category.
The top three in each category of the liliko‘i cooking contest received cash prizes for their passionfruit creations.
