Since 1969, Huggo’s has offered fine dining in its beautiful waterfront location on Aliʻi Drive in downtown Kailua-Kona. Famous for its steak, fish and extensive salad bar, its been a favorite dinner spot for decades—a place where locals and tourists gather for fresh food and oceanfront views.

This summer, the acclaimed establishment decided to open its dining room for breakfast, and by the looks of things, itʻs going rather well.

“We have this beautiful restaurant right on the water,” said executive chef Alan Heap. “Originally we were going to start the breakfast at Huggo’s on the Rocks next door, but ended up going more upscale and put together a pretty glamorous Ali‘i Drive breakfast. It’s by far the best view in town, and we’re pretty sure it’s the best food, too.”

The view is clearly spectacular, with its open-air location and dining area that stretches out over the ocean for an expansive view of the horizon.

Serving breakfast for only a few weeks now, word is spreading about Huggo’s unique and creative menu.

“We opened the doors about a month ago,” said Heap. “Our first day we served 30 or 40 people. The second day we served 100-plus, and we’ve been serving 100-plus every day since then. It’s seems they love us! It’s been going fabulous. We have a great line of experienced breakfast cooks who we pulled in from various establishments around the island and they’re putting out a really good product.”

One stand-out menu item is the Onolicious Bao Bun Benedict. A twist on the traditional eggs benedict, this creation boasts fresh catch atop a fresh bao bun, asparagus, poached eggs and yuzu hollandaise sauce.

If itʻs a sweet tooth that needs satisfying, there’s the Apple Banana and Tahini Stuffed French Toast, made with Hawaiian brioche bread, caramel drizzle and whipped butter. Another nice, yet unexpected touch, are the free warm banana muffins that are served while diners await their meals.

“This breakfast is different than any breakfast in town,” said Heap. “We have a little bit of everything on the menu, including exotic breakfast items. Everything is made fresh from scratch every morning. It really is a topnotch breakfast. We put a lot of time and thought into coming up with something original. My favorite is the breakfast burrito, which has chipotle sauce, french fries, scrambled eggs and spinach, and it’s wrapped in a spinach tortilla. And our Eggs Benedict are the best!”

Huggoʻs also plans to open up its bar and lounge area for continental breakfast in the near future. Theyʻll serve up coffee, pastries and bagels for those wanting to stop by for a quick bite and forgo the full oceanfront dining experience.

Huggoʻs is located at 75-5828 Khaki Road in Kailua-Kona, just off Aliʻi Drive.
