The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation officials today announced impacts that will affect travelers due to several large construction projects near Kahului Airport. Projects include a new access road, which opens on Saturday, July 23, 2016, and the recently started Consolidated Car Rental Facility.
Construction of the new access road is nearly complete. Final landscape and irrigation work is being carried out by the contractor.
The road is scheduled to open on Saturday, July 23.
The airport will be accessed from Hāna Highway on the new road or from a new on-ramp located off of Aʻalele Street.

When the new road is opened, the current access road from Keolani Place will be closed. No vehicular access will be allowed to pass Aʻalele Street going north towards the airport.
The entrance to the general public parking will also be closed and a new entrance located on the north side of the parking lot (across from the baggage claim area) will be opened.

Work on the new CONRAC Facility has begun.

The project includes the construction of a three-story parking structure for rental cars and employee parking.
The CONRAC will accommodate approximately 4,000 cars.
A new guided tram will also be constructed to take travelers between the CONRAC and the ticketing-baggage claim area.
Construction will take approximately 30 months.

There will be several impacts to the parking facilities, both public and employee.
Construction of these facilities will result in a temporary loss of parking spaces due to the construction activities. In order to make up for these lost spaces, the airport is in the process of constructing temporary employee parking to be located in other areas of the airport.
The state DOT will provide updates as the opening nears.
