Eighteen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between April 18 and April 24. Six of the 18 arrested were involved in traffic crashes, while three were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 341 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 14 percent increase from last year’s count of 299 arrests during the same time period.
Broken down by district, three arrests took place in the South Hilo district. Five occurred in the Puna district, while nine were listed in the Kona district and one was reported in the South Kohala District.
Major accidents have decreased by 4.2 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 457 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 477 during the same time period in 2015.

Eight fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways, one of which resulted in multiple deaths. Those crashes resulted in nine fatalities. Five fatal crashes had also occurred at this point last year, with a total of seven traffic fatalities. The numbers represent an increase of 60 percent in fatal crashes and 28.6 percent for fatalities.
HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
