While not quite meeting the high rankings of sister-island Maui, the Big Island was noted as the fourth best island in the United States in travel planning and booking site TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards on Tuesday.
The island of Maui took the publication’s top rankings as both the Top Island in the World and Top Island in the United States.
Rankings are based on an algorithm that processed the quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants, and attractions on islands across the globe during a 12-month period. The algorithm also gauges booking interest on TripAdvisor.

According to TripAdvisor, the Big Island has an average nightly hotel rate of $270 with seasonal rate averages ranging from $267 in the Fall to $315 in the Winter.
TripAdvisor notes that the Big Island is home to “a variety of volcanoes, waterfalls, and beaches, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.”
Oahu also made the top 10 list in the U.S., ranking one spot above the Big Island.

“With common traits like breathtaking beaches, exciting activities and popular hotels and restaurants, the Travelers’ Choice Islands are favorites of the TripAdvisor community,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “While most of these islands have year-round appeal, TripAdvisor hotel booking data shows that bargain-hunters can save nearly 30 percent per night on average when staying at the top U.S. islands during the shoulder season rather than the peak.”
