Open Mic Night Previews 2016 Songwriting Festival

A common phrase about music compares a song to what feelings sound like. Songs are the creative works of songwriters who are able to put words and music together so that others can use it to express their feelings or use it as their companion as they go about their daily routines.

These songwriters are the backbone to many of our favorite artists’ careers, as well as to the artists themselves.  

An exciting event for songwriters is coming to the Big Island this summer. The Hawai’i Songwriting Festival brings together songwriters from Hawai’i and beyond and other music industry professionals together to share, learn, and be inspired by the art of songwriting.  

As a special treat to this upcoming event, songwriters from around the island are invited to participate in three open mic songwriting contests.  

The first open mic will take place on Friday, March 5 in Kailua-Kona at the Kona Pub and Brewery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The second open mic will be held in Hilo on Saturday, March 7 at the Hilo Town Tavern from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the last open mic songwriting contest will be held at the Big Island Brewhaus in Waimea from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  

Since the contest is based on song lyrics and melody, each songwriter is asked to bring three copies of their lyric sheet for the judges to go over while the songwriter performs their song.  

One winner will be chosen from each competition site. The winners will earn free attendance to the Hawai’i Songwriting Festival, which is being held June 16-18 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
