Hilo High School is expected to announce as early as Tuesday that Kaeo Drummundo will stay on as head coach of the Vikings’ football program, according to sources close to the situation.

Drummundo, along with Lisa Pana, were named co-head coaches of Hilo’s football team after David Baldwin was placed on an indefinite leave of absence for unspecified reasons. A spokesperson for the Department of Education told Hawai’i Prep World last month that the investigation into Baldwin had been completed, but did not release what they found.

Despite the change at the top shortly before the start of the season, Drummundo and Pana led the charge in pulling Hilo together, eventually winning the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship over Kealakehe and earning a berth to the state tournament, where the Vikings lost to Mililani at Aloha Stadium.

Drummundo, an officer with the Hawai’i Police Department, was one of several candidates who interviewed for the open head coaching position last week. It is not known who else had applied for the position.
