A pop up book? No, a Flag Book.

The Volcano Art Center will host Charlene Asato for a one-day workshop on Saturday, Jan. 30 on the imaginative Flag Book, created by Hedi Kyle.

A Flag Book’s spine is an accordion folded with flags attached that creates a pop-up effect when the book is opened. Flags on the book can be drawings, photographs, or abstract imagery, especially structured well for creating holiday or birthday memories. The books are also an act of art.

Asato, who is an avid book and paper artist, also spends time in photography, calligraphy, and doll arts. Her books have won awards in both local and national juried shows.

Attendees should bring an x-acto knife with a fresh #11 blade, cutting mat, scissors, pencil, metal edge rulers, bone folder, glue stick, and an old magazine or catalog for gluing. Other art supplies like stamps, photographs, colored pencils, crayons, and stencils are optional.

Course fee is $35, or $32 for VAC members, plus a $10 material fee.
