A single-family house off Ohai Street in Hilo caught fire early Thursday morning.

The Hawai’i County Fire Department reports that three possible squatters were occupying the abandoned structure.

HFD responded at 1:23 a.m., where they found heavy smoke exiting a bedroom window on the right side of the structure and light smoke coming from other windows and the front door.

The fire was contained to one bedroom and a connecting bathroom. Portions of the hallway adjacent to both room was also damaged.

Two female occupants were located in the house and were assisted by the Hawai’i Police Department. The pair was not injured and neither sought medical attention.

An additional male occupant is suspected to have notified the females of the fire before leaving the scene prior to the arrival of HFD and police.

Officials detoured traffic onto Puueo Street as they attended to the fire.
