Olaf Downgraded to Tropical Storm

Hurricane Olaf lost enough strength Sunday to be downgraded to a tropical storm. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center downgraded the hurricane to Tropical Storm Olaf in its 11 p.m. advisory.

As of 5 a.m. Monday, high surf continues to be generated by swells associated with Tropical Storm Olaf. The elevated surf was primarily along east facing shores of the Big Island, and a high surf advisory has been extended through 6 p.m. Monday.

Tropical Storm Olaf was located 935 miles east-northeast of Hilo, as of 5 a.m., circulating winds at 60 miles per hour. The storm was traveling northeast at 10 mph.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to continue on its path with a slight increase in forward speed through Tuesday, continued weakening is also in the forecast.

Tropical Storm Olaf is expected to continue to move towards the northeast with a slight increase in speed over the next day and a half. After that period of time, Olaf is forecast to become completely decoupled, with the remnant low level circulation turning sharply back to the southwest. By Wednesday morning, the storm is forecast to be at remnant low levels and completely dissipated by Friday.
