A Big Island high school student was announced as one of 15 students to participate in this year’s United States Senator Brian Schatz Seniors High School Internship program.

Brianne Schlegelmilch, a student at St. Joseph School, will take part in the program as the lone Big Island student.

Senator Schatz selected interns based on their community involvement, diversity of interests, and demonstrated leadership qualities for the program, now in its third year.

Students are required to maintain a 2.5 grade point average and are encouraged to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities.

“Everyone one of our Schatz Seniors is a stand-out,” said Senator Schatz. “They all share an interest in civic leadership and are highly engaged in their schools and communities. My staff and I look forward to working with them.”

The program provides students a hands-on learning opportunity about the U.S. Senate and creates a forum for students to share issues and information with Senator Schatz and his staff.
