Dr. Criag Ono, Chief of Staff of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, based out of Honolulu, is in Saipan assisting with the aftereffects of Typhoon Soudelor that hit the country late Sunday night and into Monday morning.
According to Shriners officials, Dr. Ono, along with two members of his medical team who were in Saipan for regularly scheduled orthopaedic clinics, are treating victims, including a Big Island boy who suffered multiple lacerations during the storm.
The team will continue to care for the boy once back in Hawai’i.
Injuries being tended to by the Hawai’i team, who is on-call at Commonwealth Health Center, include emergency room treatments for lacerations from flying glass and an injury to an individual’s upper arm bone.

Cherlyn Caneda, a Shriner’s nurse with the team, said she is “encouraged by the strength of the people of Saipan.”
The Category 2 storm hit Saipan at 11 p.m. local time, causing major infrastructure damage and downed power lines.
