Volcano Art Center will host a basic mushroom cultivation course with Zach “The Mushroom Guy” Mermel.

The course will include information on basic fungal biology and how fungal mycelium colonizes with various materials, like wooden logs and straw. Mermel will teach participants about the health benefits of certain edible and medicinal fungi in Hawai’i.

Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to participate “hands on” as they inoculate their own mushroom kits and logs.

Despite mushrooms being part of the less than glorious fungi kingdom, they play a vital role in a diet, as an excellent source of vegetarian protein and nutrition.
