Twenty-one motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between June 29 and July 5 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 21 drivers, 10 were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

In 2015, there has been a total of 513 DUI arrests, compared to 636 during the same period last year. This shows a decrease by 19.3 percent.

Major accidents remain from 2014 numbers, however only slightly. A total of 759 major accidents have occurred this year, compared to 810 last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

Traffic fatalities are up by 85.7 percent in 2015. Thirteen fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways so far this year while seven took place during the same time period last year. Of the 13 fatalities, four were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
