Sixteen motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between June 22 and June 28 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 16 drivers, six were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
So far in 2015, a total of 492 DUI arrests have been made. That number is a decrease of 20.8 percent, compared to 2014’s 601 arrests during the same period.
Major accidents are also down by a small margin of 5.2 percent. So far, 729 major accidents have occurred on Big Island roadways. Last year at this time, 769 major accidents had occurred.
Traffic fatalities remain up by 71.4 percent in 2015. Twelve fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways so far this year, while seven took place during the same time period. According to HPD, four of the deaths were related to drugs and three involved a combination of drugs and alcohol.

Authorities will maintain DUI roadblocks and continue patrols throughout the island.
