An early morning fire in the North Glenwood Road area of Volcano caused $30,000 in damage, according to the Hawai’i County Fire Department.

Fire officials responded at 4:08 a.m. to a two-story wooden single-family home that was fully engulfed in flames. Neighbors said the home has not been lived in for some time but that “squatters” were living in the structure and that it still had electrical and gas utilities.

The back of the home had collapsed, but the front was still standing, according to fire personnel on the scene. A defensive attack was done on the structure, which protected the fire from spreading to the nearby wooded area, which was described as being surrounded by “heavy bamboo and other trees.”

Total loss was determined to be $30,000.
