Children in Hawai’i won’t go hungry over the summer if the Hawai’i State Department of Education has anything to do with it.

The DOE’s Seamless Summer Program will provide free meals to children at 42 public school locations throughout the state over the summer, including eight locations on the Big Island.

Hilo Intermediate School, Honoka’a High and Intermediate School, Hilo Language Immersion Program, Kea’au Middle School, Keaukaha Elementary School, Kohala High School, Waiakea High School, and Waimea Elementary School are the participating Big Island locations.

The program begins in June and all children under the age of 18 will be able to receive free meals Monday through Friday during scheduled times.

Established to ensure low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals over the summer, SSP is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.

“We encourage families to take advantage of the opportunities to ensure their children have nutritious meals our schools can help provide,” said Dann Carlson, assistant superintendent of the Office of School Facilities and Support Services. “Your child does not have to be enrolled in school to be served a meal. Contact the school in your area to help us prepare for the food service.”
