Eighteen motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between April 13 and April 19. Of the 18 arrests, six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly statistical report.
A decrease in DUI arrest continues to be seen in 2015. So far, there have been 289 DUI arrests, compared to 404 during the same time last year, a decrease of 28.5 percent.
Major accidents also continue to remain down from last year. In 2015, there have been 412 major accidents, compared to 511 in 2014, a decrease of 19.4 percent.
Traffic fatalities, however, are on the rise. Fatal accidents on Big Island roads have climbed by 75 percent so far this year. There have been seven deaths, compared to four last year. Police say that of the seven fatalities in 2015, one was drug related.
