The Hawai’i County Fire Department responded to a brush fire that occurred along the Waikoloa side of Kawaihae Road off of Highway 19 just after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

According to HFD officials, five fire engines, three tankers, and one medic unit arrived on scene to find about five acres of land burning between mile markers 64 and 65. Winds were blowing to the west at about 10 to 15 miles per hour.

Ten HFD personnel and one volunteer got the fire under control by dusk. Three firefighters remained at the scene overnight to monitor conditions.

One lane of Highway 19 was closed for several hours as officials gained control of the fire. Hawai’i Police Department officers assisted in traffic control.
