The University of Hawai’i at Hilo has a considerable margin to make up if it wants to finish near the top of the 2014-2015 PacWest Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings.

Following the winter season, UH-Hilo is ranked ninth in the 13-team conference standings, leading only Notre Dame de Namur, Dominican (CA), Chaminade, and Holy Names. The Vulcans have a current score of 38 and an average per sport of 6.333, considerably behind conference leader Cal Baptist, who has amassed 87 points and a 12.429 average.

Points are awarded from highest to lowest based on the conference ranking of each school. The average score per sport determines the overall winner, not the total amount of points. Only two schools, Hawai’i Pacific University and Holy Names, sponsor every one of the conference’s 13 sports, which is why the average score is used to determine the top program.

UH-Hilo received eight points, its best score in any fall or winter sport, for its seventh place finish in women’s softball. The Vulcans were 4-4-4 in conference play and 7-5-6 overall.

Just four points were awarded to UH-Hilo in cross country, the lowest amount of any sport UH-Hilo participated in.

There will be chances to move up in the rankings. UH-Hilo’s athletic department sponsors every sport the PacWest sponsors in the spring season, including men’s and women’s tennis, softball, baseball, and men’s and women’s golf.

Cal Baptist, meanwhile, does not participate in tennis, and second place school Azusa Pacific does not sponsor golf.
