The Hawai’i County Fire Department rescued a 23-year-old woman who fell at the bottom of a 50-foot waterfall at Niikai Gulch, just off of Kaiwiki Road, on Saturday.

According to the Fire Department, crews responded to the scene just before 3:45 p.m., and ground crews tended to the woman, who had suffered an ankle injury. HFD’s Chopper 1 was needed to retrieve the woman, since access to the area by land was difficult. A billy pugh net was lowered to retrieve the patient and bring her to an area where medics could treat her.

The woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center for further examination.
