The Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation will close the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens’ playground equipment while the surface is upgraded to a synthetic turf safety system.

The closures will occur weekdays between Monday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Oct. 24. The playground equipment will be available to use during this two-week span on Saturday Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19.

The project will be completed and the park reopened permanently to the public on Oct. 25.

The Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens is located off of Stainback Hwy., approximately 5 miles south of Hilo. The 12-acre zoo is the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. Admission to the zoo and use of the playground is free.
