The County of Hawai`i Department of Parks and Recreation has extended the deadline for interested participants in this year’s Keiki Triathlon.
The original deadline was set for Friday, but the County says that it wants to fill up all 120 available entries in the race and will leave registration open until all spots are taken. If all slots aren’t filled, the cut-off time to sign up will be on the day of the event, Oct. 18, at 7:30 a.m.
The race will be held at Kailua Park.
The race is open to keiki ages seven to 14 years old. The course consists of a 100-yard swim, 3.4-mile bicycle race, and a mile-long run. The distances will be cut in half for competitors between 7-8 years old.

To give the youngsters an added taste of what an IRONMAN event feels like, the County will be closing off the northern end of Kuakini Hwy and the makai sections of Loloko St. and Makala Blvd. to vehicle traffic between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. This will allow the youngsters to race on public streets, similar to what IRONMAN triathletes are doing.
During the Keiki Triathlon, Kailua Park and its surrounding ball fields will be closed. Kekuaokalani Gymnasium and the Kona Community Acquatic Center will also be off limits to the public while the event is happening.
There is a $5 fee to enter the race. Forms can be found by visiting the County’s website or by visiting any local swimming pool, gymnasium, or County recreation site.
