The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for East facing shores across the state, effective immediately and running until 6:00 p.m. Saturday.

In the advisory, issued at 1:37 p.m. Friday, the NWS said that the mixture of a long period north northeast swell and locally generated wind waves is creating higher than normal surf for Windward shores.

In conjunction with the high surf announcement, the Hawai`i Police Department announced that it had closed Bayfront Highway between Pauahi Street and Waianuenue Avenue because of the potential for waves to wash onto the road.

The NWS forecast says that 6 – 8 foot surf is forecast for Windward exposures through Saturday afternoon.
