An end of Summer Celebration that includes a fireworks exhibition to make up for the abbreviated Fourth of July show will take place this Saturday, Aug. 23, starting 10 a.m. at Mo’oheau Park at Hilo Bayfront.

Festivities will include children’s games, activities and entertainment culminating with fireworks set to blast off at 8 p.m.

After the infamous Fourth of July “fireworks fizzle” of 2014, Don Pascual of Hawaii Explosives & Pyrotechnics, Inc., issued a public apology and promised another show for Hilo. “Stay tuned,” he said in a County release, “the best is yet to come.”

On stage at the Bandstand beginning at 3 p.m. will be Braddah Waltah & Friends, Colt Cabana, the Michael Strand Band and “Girls Night Out,” presented by Pepe Romero and CJ Promotions.

Bayfront Highway will be closed from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. August 23. Gates at the Mo’oheau Bus Terminal, Mo’oheau Park Ball Field and adjacent Soccer Field will be opened to allow access to the area during the fireworks exhibition.

The “Family Fun Fest” is an alcohol-, drug- and litter-free event sponsored by the County of Hawaii in partnership with Destination Hilo, Young Brothers, Hawaii Explosives, Hilo Jaycees and the State of Hawaii.
