An eight-year-old boy is hospitalized after nearly drowning late Tuesday morning in the pool at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa pool.

The unidentified boy was discovered at the bottom of the pool and an off-duty firefighter who was vacationing at the hotel brought him to poolside and started rescue breathing, said HFD Capt. Shawn Nakakura in a Hawaii Fire Department release.

Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida Nakakura got the boy breathing on his own again and the youth was taken to Kona Community Hospital in serious but stable condition, Nakakura said.

Fire Inspector Palani Kurashige, who was on duty in the vicinity, also assisted in the rescue, HFD said.
