Nighttime construction work beginning tonight on Kamehameha Avenue will require closures of Hilo’s Bayfront Highway until at least July 25.

The work beginning at the Pauahi Street intersection is scheduled — weather permitting — between the hours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday through Friday

According to the Department of Public Works, Bayfront Highway will be closed to all traffic during the nighttime construction.

Motorists heading from Hilo toward Hamakua can use Waianuenue Avenue to access Highway 19, also known as the Hawaii Belt Road.

During the closures, Hilo-bound vehicles on the belt road must turn right at Waianuenue Avenue. Shoreline access will be available at that intersection.

The $13 million Kamehameha Avenue project involves major renovations to the road, its sidewalks and drainage from Ponahawai Street to a location just short of the Hilo Iron Works building adjacent to Wailoa Bridge.
