The Waiakea Uka area of Hilo will have a new $5.9 million fire station by the end of next year.

That is according to a draft environmental assessment for the new Haihai Fire Station released today.

The station to be located across Haihai Street from the Hilo Municipal Golf Course driving range will replace the existing Kawailani Fire Station, which has run out of room.

The new station will be built on state land on the corner of Haihai Street and Laula Road. The state Board of Land and Natural Resources last year approved a Hawaii County request to withdraw two acres from a pasture lease held by Michael Tulang to be provided for the new station.

The new 12,000-square foot station will contain 30 rooms including living quarters, offices, locker rooms, classrooms, training room, kitchen and storage. It will have a total of 23 parking stalls, including two that will be ADA-compliant.

A lack of space for vehicles, vehicles and equipment at the existing Kawailani Fire Station at the opposite end of the golf course has been cited as the reason for its replacement.
