Puna Man Accused of Firing Rifle Near Wife’s Head

A 48-year-old Puna man was charged with four offenses today for allegedly firing off shots with a rifle next to his wife’s head.

Police said Leighton Kaai Jr. was arrested Tuesday by officers responding to a dropped 911 call on Orchid Drive in the Ainaloa Estates subdivision.

The man’s wife told police that her husband had brandished a .22-caliber rifle and fire shots next to while she was lying in bed.

Charges against Kaai include first-degree reckless endangering, first-degree terroristic threatening and two firearms offenses.

He remained in custody today at the Hilo cellblock with his bail set at $6,000.
