Take a “Sunday Walk in the Park” June 8 in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The five-mile round-trip hike, sponsored by the non-profit Friends of HVNP, will start at the park’s resources management parking area at 10:30 a.m.

Hike leader Nick Shema will take Kilauea Iki Trail to Na Huku (Thurston Lava Tube), then down the Escape Road for about one mile, taking a right on the Crater Rim Trail.

“We will follow that trail to the Chain of Craters Road and proceed to the Devastation Trail parking lot,” Shema said in a FHVNP release. “From there we will take the Byron Ledge Trail to the Kilauea Iki Trail and back to the starting location.”

Bring a bag lunch to eat along the way, Shema advised.

The hike is moderately strenuous mostly on forested trails. The starting elevation is 4,000 feet and hikers should expect variable weather conditions, including sunny, windy, chilly and/or rainy.

FHVNP’s monthly hikes are free for FHVNP members and non-members are welcome to join to attend. Annual memberships are $30, $45 for families.
