UPDATE: Stabbing Suspect Charged; Bail set at $374,000

The Ocean View man arrested in Saturday’s stabbing at a Hilo beach park was charged today second-degree attempted murder and 10 other offenses.

Bail for 46-year-old Paul Gibson has been set at $374,000.

Gibson was also charged with third-degree assault, two counts of terroristic threatening, five firearms offenses, resisting an order to stop and failure to provide a DNA sample.

He remained in the Hilo cellblock this afternoon pending an initial court appearance Tuesday.

Police today were continuing to hold a 46-year-old Ka`u man pending the possible filing of charges following a stabbing incident Saturday at a Hilo beach park.

Police responding to a 2:15 p.m. call were told that a 41-year-old Hilo man had sustained multiple stab wounds in the back following an altercation with another man.

The incident happened off Keaukaha Road, a loop off Kalanianaole Avenue also known as 4-mile that is adjacent to James Kealoha Beach Park.

The victim was being taken to the hospital in a private vehicle that was met by a fire department ambulance which transported him to Hilo Medical Center. He was initially listed in critical but stable condition.

Police located the suspect in the stabbing, identified as Paul Gibson of Ocean View, six minutes later on Laukapu Street.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
