Oahu Halau Finish 1-2 at Merrie Monarch
Oahu’s Ka Leo O Laka I Ka Hikina O Ka La, under the direction of kumu hula Kaleo Trinidad, won the overall title and Lokalia Montgomery Perpetual Trophy at Saturday night’s finale of the 51st annual Merrie Monarch Festival at Hilo Edith Kanakaole Tennis Stadium.
The halau racked of up 1,194 points, also winning the hula ‘auana (modern) kane division Saturday night with 609 points, and finishing second in Friday night’s kane hula kahiko (ancient) division. The halau also won the kane overall title.
Second-place overall in the compeition was awarded to Ka La ‘Onohi Mai O Ha‘eha‘e under kumu hula Tracie and Keawe Lopes from Pua‘ahu‘ula, Ko‘olaupoko, Oahu, which took the wahine overall title with 1,178 points.
The Lopes’ Oahu halau also took Friday’s wahine hula kahiko competition and won a tie-breaker by two points for second place in Saturday’s wahine hula ‘auana.
Trinidad’s winning mele ‘auana was “Ho‘i Ke Aloha I Ra‘iatea,” commemorating the 1992 voyage of the Hawaiian double-hulled canoe Hokule‘a to Ra‘iatea and Rarotonga.
