A 54-year-old homeless man has been charged with robbery in connection with an incident Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Mo`oheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo.

Bail for John Michael Kapahu was set at $25,000 pending an initial court appearance.

Kapahu, who was arrested Thursday, is accused of stealing money from a 32-year-old Hakalau man at the bandstand near Hilo’s bayfront. When the victim attempted to retrieve the money, Kapahu allegedly punched him several times and fled the area.

The victim was treated at Hilo Medical Center for his injuries and released.
