UPDATE: Police Say Victim of Fall Was From Oahu

Police today identified a man who fell 80 feet down a cliff Sunday as 24-year-old Keylan Sato of Honolulu.

Police said the man was reportedly hiking down to the shoreline to dive with friends when he fell off the cliff.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police have classified the incident as a public accident.

Fire department personnel responded Sunday morning to reports of a man falling down a cliff in Pepeekeo.

Rescuers arrived at the location near Loa road to find a 23-year-old male lying unresponsive on a rocky beach with severe injuries.

Responders rappelled down the cliff to reach the man, who was determined to be in full cardiac arrest. The victim was extracted via Chopper 1 and transferred to an ambulance, where resuscitation efforts continued until his arrival at Hilo Medical Center, where he was declared dead.

According to department officials, friends of the victim who were at the scene witnessed him fall approximately 80 feet while attempting to reach the shoreline below.

A total of 12 fire and rescue personnel responded to the incident.
