Repairs are needed to the Papaikou Well, which will require the area’s Department of Water Supply customers to conserve drinking water while they are underway.
The request for a 10% reduction in daily use will go into effect when the repairs begin on Monday, Oct. 14.
The repair work, which will involve replacement of the well pump, motor and other equipment, is expected to take about a month.
The affected South Hilo areas include Papaikou, Pu`ueopaku, Paukaa and Upper Kaieie in Papaikou including Kaieie Road from Kalaoa Camp Road to Anderton Camp.
During that time, customers on the Papaikou system will be supplied drinking water from the adjoining Pi`ihonua and Kaieie Mauka water systems wells.
If Papaikou customers adhere to the requested conservation steps, water department officials said they should not notice any changes in their supply other than possible initial water pressure changes while the systems are reconfigured.
Agricultural users are being asked to reduce watering to a minimum, including irrigating during the off-peak hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to reduce drain during peak demand and to minimize evaporation.
Ways to reach the 10% reduction goal include the following:
Launder full loads only.
Dishwash full loads only.
Do not let the faucet run unnecessarily.
Do not flush toilets unnecessarily.
When bathing, use water only to wet and rinse off.
Serve drinking water only when requested.
Do not fill the bathtub all the way up.
Use a glass to rinse when brushing your teeth.
Stop lawn sprinkling.
Stop car and boat washing.
Stop dust control watering.
Use drinking water wisely.
