Waiakea HS Graduate Earns PacWest VB Award

Hawai`i Pacific University senior Chelsey Buyuan was named PacWest Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week for matches played between Sept. 9-15.

Buyuan, a graduate of Waiakea High School, accumulated 88 digs and put together a 6.77 digs per set average for the week as the Sea Warriors went 2-2 at the Seawolf Spike in Rohnert Park, CA.

Hawai`i Pacific defeated San Francisco State in four sets and Chico State in straight sets. The losses came to 24tth ranked Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus, both in three sets.

Buyuan was selected to the All-PacWest Third Team at the end of last season. She led her team with 375 digs in all 25 matches played.

So far this season, Buyuan has recorded 154 digs and averages 5.70 digs per set, both top marks on her team. She has also recorded two service aces.

Hawai`i Pacific takes its 6-2 record into conference play for the first time this season on Thursday when the Sea Warriors host the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. The Vulcans are 5-0 entering the conference opener. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
