PetSmart Charities has extended the “Primp Your Pit” campaign with the Hawaii Island Humane Society.

Originally slated just for the month of August, the campaign has been extended into September. It will last until Sept. 30 or until remaining appointments are used up.

The $20 spay/neuter procedures for pit bull terriers and pit-bull terrier mixes includes a free nail trim.

For pet parents who may be hesitant to get their young puppies sterilized, HIHS noted that the American Veterinary Medical Association endorses spaying and neutering puppies as young as eight to 10 weeks old.

Research shows that the procedure may improve the behavior and health of the pet, including reducing the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections, HIHS said.

Pit bull parents who wish to take advantage of this special offer must mention the “Primp Your Pit” promotion when they schedule their appointments.

Visit HIHS.org or call the Kona shelter at 329-1175 or the Keaau shelter at 966-5458 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Aside from the Primp Your Pit campaign, the Hawaii Island Humane Society also offers a limited number of certificates for cats and dogs redeemable at participating veterinarians that can significantly reduce the cost of spay and neuter procedures.

Some veterinarians may require pre-appointments or testing as well as pain medications or antibiotics that are not covered under the certificate.

Call the organization’s Spay/Neuter Hotline at 987-7208 for more information on the coupon program.
