Hilo Medical Center Awards Scholarships

Hilo Medical Center today announced that it has presented a total of $10,000 in scholarships to staff and family members associated with HMC to promote careers in health care in East Hawai`i.

A total of four $2,500 scholarships were awarded to the following persons:

  • Tracey Silva: a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and surgical technologist at HMC. Silva is currently enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Hawai`i Community College.
  • Jewel Andrade-Ikawa: a clerk in the Patient Services Department . Andrade-Ikawa is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Program in Healthcare Administration at Grand Canyon University based in Phoenix, AZ.
  • Reina Sako: Enrolled in the Diagnostic Ultrasound Program at Seattle University, Sako is the daughter of an HMC staffer.

Dr. Edwin Montell, Chief of Staff at HMC presented the scholarships. Montel commented on the awards, saying the applicants showed “great potential to improve the quality of health care” on the Big Island.

Physicians fund the scholarship program at HMC, which is directed toward HMC staff and family members pursuing careers in medicine.
