The Big Island Interscholastic Federation has revised their football schedule just days before non-league play is scheduled to begin.

The changes followed decisions by Kohala and Ka`u to drop their respective football teams due to low numbers. Both schools announced their decision during the first two weeks of official practice dates, allowing them to back out of competition without facing a penalty from the league.

The cancellations created two bye weeks in a regular season schedule that previously didn’t have any. It also left league members with only seven regular games.

The league’s revised schedule has teams playing regular season games for seven consecutive weeks beginning Aug. 30-31. All teams will continue to face each other, regardless of divisional affiliation.

After the regular season ends, teams in each division will be seeded based on their win-loss record. All four teams will compete in a playoff semifinal with the winners will advance to the league championship game. The BIIF’s only state berth will be at stake in the championship.

Dates and times for the league tournament are still being determined.

Games will normally begin at 5:00 p.m. with junior varsity action while varsity games follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Varsity-only games start at 7:00 p.m.

One exception to that schedule is Kea`au High, who returns to their home football field after playing last season at Wong Stadium. All of their home games will be played on Saturdays and will start with JV competition at 2:00 p.m. The varsity matchup follows at 4:30 p.m.

The other is Hawai`i Preparatory Academy. They play their home games at 2:00 p.m. on their campus field. HPA, along with Honoka`a, will not field a JV team this season.
