New County Jobless Claims Drop

Weekly unemployment claims filed in Hawaii County were down 15% last week compared to the same period last year, according to the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

Hawaii County is the only county in the state where fewer new claims were filed during the week ending Aug. 3, DBEDT reported in an Aug. 8 release. New claims on Oahu, Maui and Kauai were all higher this year than last.

Statewide weekly filings for new unemployment benefits were up an average 7.6% in Hawaii. Maui County had a 22% increase in initial filings for claims during the period, the highest number in the state.

Initial unemployment filings for the week statewide totaled 1,821, compared to 1,693 for the same period last year.
