Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Wednesday will launch the 4th annual Statewide Pedestrian Safety Month.
The campaign involves a joint effort by counties as well as private and nonprofit groups to educate residents and visitors on driver awareness and pedestrian safety.
The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the governor’s offices.
There have been five deaths involving pedestrians on the Big Island this year.
Two of those occurred in Hilo. The most recent involved a 61-year-old woman who died July 10 after being struck by a vehicle the night before at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Kalakaua Street in downtown Hilo.
The others included one in Kona and two in the rural area of Glenwood in upper Puna.
