Two Hilo men are in police custody in connection with an incident Saturday in which they allegedly used a Honda sedan to try to run a truck off the road and threatened its occupants with a handgun.

Police said the incident involved two confrontations, one occurring on Kilauea Avenue south of Kawailani Street and the other on Haihai Street at the intersection of Laula Road.

The suspects in the Honda, 25-year-old Hiram Kawelu III, who was the driver, and his passenger, 34-year-old Albert Espaniola Jr., were arrested on Monday.

On Wednesday, Kawelu was charged with reckless endangering, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving and promoting a dangerous drug. His bail was set at $13,000. Espaniola was charged with two counts of terroristic threatening and his bail was set at $20,000.

Both were being held at the Hilo cellblock today pending an initial court appearance.

Neither the driver of the truck, a 26-year-old Pepeekeo man, nor his passenger, a 25-year-old Hilo man, were injured in the incidents.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incidents that occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday contact Det. Clarence Davies at 961-2384 or [email protected].

Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
