Aki Charged With Murder, Held on $370,000 Bail
Seon Keoni Aki of Nanawale Estates was charged today with second-degree murder in connection with Monday’s shooting death of 40-year-old Mateo Balinbin Jr.
Aki was also charged with terroristic threatening and three firearms offenses, including use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and prohibited ownership of a firearm and ammunition.
He was being held today with his bail set at $370,000 pending his initial court appearance Thursday.
Police responding to a call about a shooting Monday afternoon found Balinbin’s body in a home on Maui Road in Nanawale Estates.
Aki was arrested several hours later in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
An autopsy conducted today indicated that Balinbin died of a gunshot to the head.
A convicted felon, Aki was indicted for first-degree sexual assault in 2001. As part of a plea agreement he pleaded guilty in 2003 to third-degree sexual assault, a class “C” felony.
His sentence included a requirement that he register as a sex offender.
