Chinky Mahoe’s Halau Wins 2013 Merrie Monarch Festival

Kawaili‘ula, the halau of popular Kumu Chinky Mahoe, took overall honors late last night in the 2013 Merrie Monarch Festival.

The halau from Kailua, Oahu tallied 1,055 points to edge out second-place overall finisher Halau Mohala ‘Ilima. The halau directed by Kumu Mapuana de Silva of Ka‘ohao, Oahu received 1,152 points.

Kawaili’ula also took the overall kane honors, while Halau Mohala ‘Ilima was the winner in the overall wahine competition.

In the overall competition Kawaili’ula was followed by Halau I Ka Wekiu, Kumu Micheal Casupang and Carl Veto Baker,
 with 1,1042 points; and Halau ‘O Kahikilaulani, Kumu Nohokulani Gaspang, with 1,041points.

De Silva’s Halau Mohala ‘Ilima took top honors in the overall wahine competition followed by Halau ‘O Kamuela, Kumu Kau’i Kamana’o and Kunewa Mook
, with 1,159 points. Ka La ‘Onohi Mai o Ha’eha’e with Kumu Tracy and Keawe Lopes took third.
